Solo project by Nina Pope, commissioning 56 new pieces for viewing and sale by auction at Kimbolton Castle
Invited by Frank Priest, my old art teacher, to make a work of art for Kimbolton School, I became obsessed with an auction catalogue detailing the sale of the entire contents of the 'castle' in 1949 (where the school is now housed). This inspired an ambitious and at times difficult collaboration with the school to create a new work. I invited over thirty leading artists and designers to join some of the pupils in creating contemporary works of art in response to the possessions of the Duke of Manchester sold in the 1949 auction. The contemporary collection was then exhibited at the Castle for a week and finally sold at public auction by fine art auctioneer Clive Stuart-Lockhart, in front of a live and web-based audience.
