Jaywick Escapes
2010 - 2011Project:
We're delighted to have just completed our third documentary feature film which we shot mainly during 2010 in the Essex coastal town of Jaywick, with planned festival screenings and release in 2012.
Once the favourite holiday destination for London's Eastenders, Jaywick was recently named the most deprived place in the UK. Locally notorious for high levels of crime, unemployment, dependency and anti-social behaviour, Jaywick is also the only place on the South coast where a detached home with sea view can be bought for just £50,000. Regardless of its reputation and the explicit flood warnings now rising due to climate change, Jaywick casts a powerful spell over newcomers and longstanding residents alike. Our film goes behind the net curtains of the town's quaint chalets, to find out how.
Jaywick Escapes is a Somewhere film
produced and directed by Karen Guthrie & Nina Pope. Our
production manager is Lisa James and we have executive support from
Marc Isaacs. The film is funded by Somewhere, Arts Council England,
Royal College of Art & the Science Museum, with support from
East Anglia Film Archive.
