Hypertext Journal

Our proposal centres on a contemporary interpretation of the Scottish tour made by Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell in 1773, subsequently published in their famous memoirs Johnson's Journey to the Western Isles & Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. We propose to re-enact this tour as far as possible, recording and 'publishing' our experiences using a contemporary interactive information medium - the World Wide Web.

By exploiting the limitless breadth of the Internet, advance news of the tour could be published on the Net and in the press, and email responses invited from any individual or organisation. These responses could be of any nature and, by definition, would be unpredictable. This public interaction would provide us with many directions for advance research, and, when further encouraged during the tour, would also be instrumental in the daily evolution of the journey and its resulting Internet documentation.
Throughout the duration of the trip, we would update the Internet pages daily using photography, text, video and sound, and respond to any email / material received from outside. This continuously evolving 'memoir', formed from the dialogue between the artists, their surroundings and the public, would enable the work to transcend the constraints of the conventional gallery, becoming part of an infinite information web. This piece addresses many issues inherent in the concept of a journal: Its authenticity, its authorship, its publication.
