Sent: 30/8/99 5:37 pm From: Nina Pope, nina@somewhere.org.uk To: Nadine Thompson Dear Nadine/Angela ... thanks for your message - could you send me a copy of the new press release pasted into an email (rather than attatched) as it's useful for us when we are writing/emailing to tell people about the project - on that front we may not be able to send Adam Sutherland to the loch in Scotland to fish for the golden trout so HOPEFULLY that wasn't one you listed on the PR - the estate in question don't want any publicity and so they may not let him visit - I am trying to reapproach them but it's all a bit sensitive - could you just reassure me that nothing about this has already gone out (this is a bit like Adrian's DO NOT APPOACH NOKIA - DO NOT MENTION THE GOLDEN TROUT!!) best wishes Nina ********************************************************************** Adam - before we give up on the Golden one I'd like to send this letter ... (29 pilgrims, 29 tales) Nina Pope & Karen Guthrie 2 Bedale Street, London SE1 9AL tel: 0171 357 0711 email: artists@somewhere.org.uk Dear Sir, I am one of the artists that I expect Adam Sutherland has mentioned to you in relation to our project for the Tate Gallery called /broadcast/. I understand from Adam that you have reservations about allowing him to fish on your property as part of his pilgrimage - which I entirely respect. However, I am slightly worried that I gave (via Adam) a rather confused explanation of the 'broadcasting' aspect of the piece and I just wanted to make sure this was clear. On the 10th of September Adam would like to travel to the loch in question, and preferably fish there at midnight - the next day he would ideally wait by the loch until his time slot for the 'Tale' comes up - he would then relay this back to us in London via a mobile phone, where in the market we would hear the tale rather like a live radio report. There would not be a camera crew with him and there would be no need to reveal the location of the Loch or your Estate. I can guarantee that your privacy would be entirely respected throughout the project. Adam applied to be one of the pilgrims with the idea of the Golden Trout in mind, this trip would relate back to many he made as a child with his father but would have the added interest of the pilgrimage to catch such a mysterious fish. We are extremely enthusiastic about Adam's idea so I wanted to make sure that my own lack of clarity regarding the piece hasn't been responsible for your reservations. If you would rather he did not remain by the loch to tell his tale, he could leave the loch side at dawn and return to Inverness where he could call us from. Adam's tale will only relate metaphorically to his actual journey (a long standing ambition for him) and do I hope that with my reassurances regarding the nature of our project you may be able to consider offering him the chance to fish for the trout. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you wish to discuss the matter further. I have also enclosed some supplementary material regarding the project to help explain the piece. Many thanks for your time with best wishes, Nina Pope Assuming this also falls on deaf ears ... then I think we should think more about relating it to your childhood 'fallback' fishing option - the loch by your fathers former home - if you can bear it ... Freddie was practically crying yesterday at the mere thought of it all! No doubt you'll have had further thoughts about it all over the weekend and at least now we may have records to spin?! love Nina |
