Maddening Mobile ...

I love this image from my new mobile ... which is more than can be generally said for the flipping new phone at present! Despite almost a week of faffing about in between films in Edinburgh I failed to get the damn thing set up to send messages direct to our Blog from 1569. This resulted in a rather shaming loss of temper and face just prior to departure when the news of a delayed 'sim card switch' nearly tipped me over the edge. Still between Dorian and I we're determined to beat it by the next 1942 visit!

We're just back from 1569 ... seen here posing for a pin-hole photo with our great film crew John Podpadec and Paul Baker - it seems even a bus trip to the Czech Republic with us hasn't been enough to put them off time travel with Pope & Guthrie.

DOP dinner

Just back from EIFF ... where things really started to ramp up towards the end of our stay! Having found it difficult to meet folk at the start by the end we were finding it hard to find time to watch films ...

We enjoyed a particularly surreal 'directors' dinner with a mixed bag of foreign film makers and producers, the charming Festival director Shane Danielsen ("no I REALLY liked your uniforms") and an elderly gentleman with, initially, a mystery identity. Karen and I arrived early for the meal to find him as the only other guest, we warmly introduced ourselves but he failed to mention his name. Now this being the festival it was pretty obvious he was a cinema hero the question was which one! Both of us fished about until Karen took the bull by the horns and asked his name ... it turned out to be Jack Cardiff the DOP for many classics including the Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death. His recollections, jumbled in with the multi-lingual-babble about lots of films we hadn't seen made for a really confusing but enjoyable evening. The team from Tsotsi were our favourites ... sadly their final screening was on at the same time as ours but we wish them well for the audience awards, unlikely as they are to topple the mighty "Buffy-fan" votes for Serenity.

Wanted Film Festival Friends ...

Well we're finally here at the Edinburgh Film Festival and loving every minute of it ... and we did manage to find a party - which of course wasn't as wild and exciting as I'd dreamed! As it was the launch of a film we'd actually failed to see, that may have taken the edge off it. The fact that the DJ (Pam Hogg for any fellow ex-ECA graduates) only played music from 1979 must have had some thematic link but there is a limit to how many times you can dance to Blondie ... didn't stop some people though! I did see 'Archie' from Monarch of the Glenn though - one of my top-favorite shite TV escapes, so can't really complain.

Film wise it's pretty intense - started yesterday with new UK Dogma GYPO at 9.00 am (we're committed + it was great) and rounded off with the truely creepy Danish 'Morke' which was fantastic and had me (at least) on the edge of my seat.

Our own screening was pretty full and the next is sold out ... now we just have to meet some people ...

It's a Lake District Knockout

Whilst Nina heads for the Edinburgh International Film Festival for our Bata-ville premiere, the multi-project juggling continues, with emails from Tudors all day for the Sometime Later project, a 1569 ruff order for two (Nina and I's necks are the same size - bizarre?) and a few hours this afternoon with a soft pencil trying to nail some caricatures for our 'It's a Lake District Knockout' event on Sept. 18th.....We're having 4 big mascot heads of local luminaries made so that each competing team has one to support them, and these will remain with Coniston village for them to use in any way they like after our event. So far we're going for Ruskin, Wainright, Beatrix Potter and Donald Campbell....Echoes of our earlier Grizedale pieces that used local celebrities here!
To your right you see my best effort so far - the water speed nut Donald Campbell who until recently remained at the bottom of Lake Coniston after his untimely death during his last record-breaking attempt. He'll be the mascot for the Coniston Sailing Club team - I had to ring the Ruskin Museum today to ask what colour his helmet was.
In real life Campbell had his own 'lucky' mascot called Mr Woppitt, a teddy who in fact was the sole survivor of a number of family 'crashes' until someone realised he was in fact a herald of doom.

Goodbye Somewhere ....

We're a little bit sad to see you go ....

At the risk of tempting fate, as I type this Dorian is getting ready to put our brand new CMS based site live ... and years of Somewhere's cranky HTML drops behind our seamless new front end ... or at least that's the idea. It's been a painful process but we hope you'll all agree worth it. Many thanks to Dorian for his continuing diligence with us and it!

Just when you think you've given this new site the once over with the database equivalent of a nit comb, you feel strangely compelled to just do one more search in Google for relevant links. One hour later you find yourself knee deep in some obscure webzine from 1997 that has spelled your name wrong...

EIFF here we come ...

Next week we are off to the Edinburgh International Film Festival for the world premiere of our feature-length documentary Bata-ville: We are not afraid of the future ... and I have to say somewhere are pretty excited!

We both studied at Edinburgh College of Art, and it's particularly thrilling to be heading back to premiere our very first film at the festival. We're looking forward to seeing some old somewhere friends and going to lots of the festival talks and workshops. I am worried though that we don't so far know where any of the parties are?

10 years with somewhere

This year we are celebrating 10 years of our collaboration ... since our first show together "Somewhere over the TV" ... Somewhere has come along way ... and met a lot of people!

If you are one of the many folk we've worked with over the last 10 years, you should shortly be receiving an invitation to join us at our 10 year birthday party. It's being held (along with a screening of Bata-ville) at the Hackney Empire on September the 9th - if we have lost contact with you or you'd just like more details do send us an email.
