spinning gatehouse

These pages have been made by Nina Pope as part of a commission for a temporary artwork for Lee Valley Park. The pages you are accessing here form half of the project - they are complimented by a series of engraved metal panels in the Park itself. Each panel is situated in the location that the photographs were taken, and they each display the URL for that view. You can see the drawings that appear on the panels by clicking on these titles:

racetrack...model...country pub...paradise...rural idyll...holiday homes

In developing the work for the park, I decided to work primarily around Rye House Gatehouse. It is a relatively unknown building in the north of the Park and I liked the idea of using it as a central focus point. The history of the gatehouse (as a Victorian pleasure park & 'folly') also attracted me. Finally, I was interested in the incredible range of modern leisure activities that occur in the immediate area.

I hope that by placing the panels in apparently everyday locations, regular visitors to the area will look again at the park - or perhaps visit an area formerly unknown to them; and that by placing elements of the park onto the internet, a wide audience will be drawn to it, as they were to the pleasure park. The Victorian 'oracle of wonders' is replaced here by a contemporary optical toy and veiwers both local and global are able to scroll around the minature scenery -

If you live near Lee Valley you can see the actual panels at:

I would like to thank all the people who have helped with this piece - special thanks to UNITY for hosting the pages - J SIGNS who produced the panels - RICHARD & JO from the park - all those who gave permission for the panels - Martin for his help with the photography - the VIRTUAL UCL team (esp. JAMES) - and JEZ for the postcard design.
