Project: Quote from an article by Daniel Jewesbury published in the Muster group show catalogue

"... positioning work outside the house, in this case directly outside, is Nina Pope. Having commandeered the neglected yard behind No. 2 Frobisher Place, Pope has created a 'TV garden', the planting of which she has documented on video. This video is presented as an episode in an ongoing 'backyard makeover/DIY-hitsquad'-type series. Thus Pope uses the rhetoric of lifestyle consumerism, whereby the media feed (or are used to feed) our desire for contemporary myths: the myth of landscape, potent symbol of essential freedom, the pastoral idyll that we can recreate in microcosm; the twin myths of leisure and work themselves.
It's fitting that Defence Housing Executive rules should apply in the garden: for example 80% of the garden must remain as a lawn. Given the prescence of rules even here, and the itinerant life of a service family, it's hardly surprising if few families on the estate seem to have bothered very much with their statutory plots of land. Pope's show-garden stands out like a peacock, glorious and colourful and yet ludicrously incongruous, in about equal measure."
